A brew kettle is a vessel dedicated to the heating of water and the boiling of wort; in the most basic sense, as in homebrewing, it is a large cooking pot. For commercial applications, the brew kettle is generally an enclosed tank made of some unreactive material like stainless steel that is large enough to contain boil-over. It is generally considered desirable to include a built-in whirlpool feature to help remove trub, sediment, hop residue, and any other unwanted byproducts prior to the cooling step.
